USA – Cuba Direct Mail Service to Resume after 50 years

 In SFL News

According to Reuters, The US State department and Cuban Foreign Ministry have been discussing resuming US – Cuba direct mail service after a 50 year ban. Mail service between the 2 countries has been banned since 1963, but mail can be routed to and from Cuba by neighboring countries Canada, Mexico, and Panama. Although talks between the two countries regarding direct mail delivery have been seemingly moving in a positive direction, the issue of Cuban planes landing on US soil has been set aside for future talks.

Many observers attribute the progression of talks between Cuba & the US to acts of goodwill, most recently Cuba’s decision to reject American fugitive Edward Snowden who was trying to escape Russia. If both countries continue to work together, many are hopeful (especially Cuban Americans) that the embargo’s will one day be lifted.
