Regulating Carbon Emissions: Global Airlines
An agreement aimed at getting the global airlines to curb carbon emissions has recently been approved by the general assembly of the UN group that oversees civil aviation.
After years of delays the UN group (ICAO) finally came to agreement, that allows the UN Agency create a global system to measure the output of green house gases by the aviation industry. Not only would the system be a watchdog for the environment, it could mean taxing the individual airlines for their emissions. The agreement must pass through many more level of discussion and is not meant to be implemented until 2020.
The EU had recently planned to launch a cap on trade type emissions program that would also be applied to international airways as well as their own. it is now up to the EU to accept the UN’s proposal, as theirs had originally been rejected.
Transport Canada said it was pleased with the agreement and progress that has been made. Many are calling this the first emissions accord for any global sector.
