Computers Cause Bottleneck at NY/NJ Ports
A new computer system introduced at the Ports of NY and NJ have been blamed for an increasing bottleneck at the busiest terminals on the US East coast. According to Maher Terminals LLC who are responsible for 1/3 of the shipping volume, the introduction of a new computer system set to increase efficiency has failed. The new system caused delays when it would shut down unexpectedly, making it difficult for truckers and terminal staff to keep the freight flowing. The problem was only then compounded as retailers geared up for the back to school season, struggling to keep shelves stocked and units available for peak demand.
Although Ports and terminals have addressed the issues, delays will be expected to continue for a short time as shippers have no intent on decreasing shipping volumes during the summer season.
