Cargo Crime
According to Reuters, cargo crime is a multi-billion dollar business in Canada. Local groups; The Canadian Trucking Alliance, in partnership with the Ontario Trucking Association, Verisk Crime Analytics Canada, CargoNet and various police agencies along Highway 401 are planning to meet and discuss the problem of hijacked cargo that causes billions of dollars in losses each year. The main objective of the meeting is to raise awareness about the issue, and then take steps to have agencies across Canada working together to combat the problem, instead of having isolated investigations.
Hopefully through cooperation, these groups including law enforcement, can bring the number of cargo thefts and frauds down over the next few years by modelling CargoNet’s successful program that includes a secure, data collection system, deterrence strategies and an analytic database.
