Canal Craze: Central America About to get a Makeover
Telecoms business man Wang Jing announced his plan for a $40 billion dollar project that he says will rival the Panama Canal. The project is set to create a canal with two deep water ports, a railway, oil pipelines and a new highway through Nicaragua. The project could be a failure waiting to happen, as neighboring countries have also been developing plans for new canals.
El Salvador and Honduras have planned construction for a dry port, Guatemala has an almost identical plan to that of the Nicaraguan plan, while the Panama Canal has started work on the Sub-Panamex canal to offer similar services. It will be interesting to see which of these projects actually moves to fruition, and the impact it will have on the transport of goods through Central America.
